PTCA Study Guide: PyTorch Certified Associate
Make small, reproducible PyTorch experiments the centre of your preparation. For each result, explain tensor shapes, the data path and the learning step. A notebook that runs once is less useful than one whose behaviour you can predict.

Start with the official PTCA requirements
Open the official PTCA certification or study-guide page ↗. Confirm the objectives that apply to your exam date, including any announced future updates. Use the provider's page for current exam format, prerequisites and scheduling information.
A practice bank is a learning supplement. Its question count is a product choice, and its score is not a guarantee of certification readiness.
PTCA topic checklist
Use the topic areas represented in our practice library to organise revision, then compare them with the current official objectives. They do not replace the provider's blueprint.

Four practical PTCA study exercises
Keep the exercise small enough to finish and explain. The deliverable matters: it makes gaps visible before you repeat another practice test.
1. Trace shapes through a model
Start with a tiny batch and a simple model. Write the expected shape before each operation, then compare your prediction with the actual output.
Keep this result: A tensor-shape table and an explanation of one mismatch you corrected.
2. Inspect the data path
Build a small data-loading example with a train/validation split. Check batching and preprocessing, and explain what information must remain outside the training process.
Keep this result: A data-flow sketch and a check for accidental validation leakage.
3. Explain a training step
Use a simple example to follow predictions, loss, gradients and parameter updates. Compare a training pass with an evaluation pass rather than memorizing a list of calls.
Keep this result: A short annotated walkthrough of one batch.
4. Measure before optimizing
Choose a tiny performance experiment. Change one factor at a time and check output correctness as well as runtime so that a faster result does not hide a changed experiment.
Keep this result: A baseline and a repeatable comparison with stated limitations.
Study mistakes to watch for
- Guessing tensor dimensions instead of checking them.
- Comparing experiments that changed several factors at once.
- Reading a validation score without checking the split and preprocessing.
After a wrong answer, write the scenario constraint you missed and why the strongest alternative fails. Revisit the concept with a fresh example before repeating the same question.
