DP-700 Study Guide: Microsoft Fabric Data Engineer
Use an end-to-end data flow as your study project. Follow one record from ingestion through transformation to monitoring. The most useful practice explains both a normal run and what happens when the same run fails or repeats.

Start with the official DP-700 requirements
Open the official DP-700 certification or study-guide page ↗. Confirm the objectives that apply to your exam date, including any announced future updates. Use the provider's page for current exam format, prerequisites and scheduling information.
A practice bank is a learning supplement. Its question count is a product choice, and its score is not a guarantee of certification readiness.
DP-700 topic checklist
Use the topic areas represented in our practice library to organise revision, then compare them with the current official objectives. They do not replace the provider's blueprint.
- Implement and manage an analytics solution
- Ingest and transform data
- Monitor and optimize an analytics solution
Four practical DP-700 study exercises
Keep the exercise small enough to finish and explain. The deliverable matters: it makes gaps visible before you repeat another practice test.
1. Choose an ingestion approach
Define a batch source and a time-sensitive source. Write a freshness target, expected volume and recovery requirement for each before choosing tools from the official study objectives.
Keep this result: A decision table that connects the requirements to your proposed ingestion approach.
2. Design a repeatable transformation
Run the same small dataset twice. Include late-arriving data and duplicate input. Explain how the second run should affect the output rather than assuming that every run receives clean, new records.
Keep this result: Input/output examples and a rule for duplicate or repeated processing.
3. Trace a failed run
Create a troubleshooting narrative: the source was reachable, a transformation failed, and a downstream table was not updated. List what you would inspect first and why.
Keep this result: A failure timeline and a recovery plan that avoids blindly rerunning every stage.
4. Compare correctness with speed
Choose one transformation and establish a baseline. Propose a change to data layout or processing, then check both runtime and output consistency.
Keep this result: A short experiment log showing the original result, the proposed change and what would make you reject it.
Study mistakes to watch for
- Picking a tool before reading latency and recovery requirements.
- Optimizing runtime without checking that the output is still correct.
- Ignoring permissions, orchestration and monitoring while focusing only on transformation code.
After a wrong answer, write the scenario constraint you missed and why the strongest alternative fails. Revisit the concept with a fresh example before repeating the same question.
